The moment of truth came. the test of might came. The survival of the fittest. If one chokes, all hopes of getting out alive die. The intensity commenced as we lined up. We waited for the gun to go off. Every second felt like minutes. Our hearts started thumping from the danger. Even the mightiest fear. The gun went off, and the battle began.
It all happened in CCS Top 8, a meet where all the most prestigious runners attend. I felt such pride when I heard that I got invited. I received the invitation on a Thursday, three weeks before the meet. One problem though, I just got out of an injury and I wasn’t at 100%. The fear of not exceeding the expectations of everyone took over my mind. One week passed and I didn’t see any improvements in my performance. I started worrying. Spring break came in, and we got a week of rest. After that, I worked harder than any athlete out there. Everyday putting 100% to every single workout just like rocky balboa. I had one object in mind, and just one: get better. The track meet came. We were competing for the 4x400. I started off the race. My mind started gaining crazy thoughts about losing. As I walked to the blocks, I hesitated to see my hands shaking. I continued walking. On the outside, I seemed as this lion ready to kill, my pride showed at its highest point, but on the inside, I was nervous yet confident. I got to the blocks, I felt this weird feeling in my tummy. I tilted my head up, and stared at the beautiful black sky. The lights around the track shunned such an immense light. I assumed my position in the blocks. I had one object, beat the Bellarmine guy; they were the team to beat. We all waited for the gun to go off. The boom came. We all.ran with our hearts. I felt every single step I took. The first 100 meters came, the best ones started to beat others. The 200 meters came; it showed the best ones in the race. The Bellarmine guy and me started to separate from the pack. The 300 meters came. Nobody had any energy to continue. The ones with the biggest heart would be known. I heard a voice from afar. My coach screamed, “Run Lugi! He’s catching up to you!”. I was shocked .I immediately pulled out a force I never expected to be hidden within me. I started sprinting even faster, and beat everyone. I handed off the baton,. After that, my sight turned white. I wasn’t aware of what direction I headed towards. I got to the field, and collapsed from exhaustion. I knew I ran the race of my life. Later I found out that I ran 53.85 seconds. We didn’t win the race, but we came close in second place. Even the mightiest get nervous. The unexpected always happens. And dreams can be achieved through hard work. That’s what I learned throughout that journey, and has made me the person I am today.
julioandres asked: First real meet of my high school career yesterday. First in distance medley relay and individual 800. Second in 4x400. I got us a decent lead but my team barely lost it in the last leg by 5 feet. I was starter. It was a mixed jv and freshman meet and I beat a lot of jv. It was pretty fun. I'm also going to start long and triple next week.
good job man. im trying the triple too. have a successful season!
